First off, I love Spring! It’s my absolute favourite season of the year. I love the feeling of starting to peel off the layers of clothes, watching the fresh new green sprigs popping up on the trees, and most of all I love getting out and spending more time outside. I also love the frenzy of outdoor festivals that start popping up from September, especially the wine festivals.
It seems like September is the month of wine festivals in Joburg, and I’m completely fine with that. This past weekend I was invited by Zapper to check out the Groves and Vineyards festival at Casalinga in Muldersdrift. It’s one of my favourite wine festivals, and this year they decided to add a Summer edition.
The festival features loads of delicious wines from around SA, plenty of tasty food, and a few nice stalls selling things like candles, jewellery, and clothes. There was also a big stage setup outside where some pretty awesome SA bands performed. We went on Saturday and the line-up included Jesse Clegg, Monark, Good Luck and the Parlotones.
Our first stop though was at the Zapper stand, where we were told all about the awesome app. I’ve seen Zapper around at other events and markets before but hadn’t downloaded the app yet so it was cool to check it out. I love apps that help make every day processes easier, and Zapper definitely does that and a little bit more. Majority of the stalls at the festival were signed up with Zapper, so paying for everything was super easy.
How to use Zapper
If you haven’t used Zapper before all you have to do is download the app from the Apple Store or Google Play and follow the easy prompts to sign up. You’ll need to load your personal and card details (Visa or Mastercard Cheque and Credit cards are accepted) and set up a pin. Then you’re good to go.
Once you’re all set up, anytime you want to use Zapper to make a payment you just need to open the app, select ‘Scan & Pay’ on the home screen and scan the stall/restaurants QR code. You then manually enter the amount that you need to pay and press ‘Pay’. The payment then comes off your credit/debit card. I was really surprised at how quickly it worked – though if the connection is a bit slow the apps shares some ‘wise words’ to keep you entertained while you wait.
You’re also able to get vouchers on the app. They had a promotion going at the festival where I could pick a QR code on a giant dice and scan the QR code and win a voucher. I won a R40 voucher to spend at any of the stalls at the festival. I spent it on a delicious salami roll from Salumi Deli. Which doubled up with the R25 off for my first Zapper purchase.
Besides that though, there are pre-installed vouchers in the app for various restaurants. The app picks up restaurants in your vicinity and loads the vouchers – eg. 10% off your bill at Pizza Perfect and Spur. I’ll definitely be making use of these soon.
Overall, it was a lovely afternoon spent in the sun. We tasted a bunch of different wines and snacked on even more delicious treats – olives, preserves, chocolates, fudges, and preserves. The bands added, even more, festivity to the already buzzing crowd.
I received a complimentary ticket to the Groves and Vineyards festival by Zapper, though as always all opinions expressed are my own.
