The famous novelist Ernest Hemingway once said, “I never knew a morning in Africa where I woke up and was not happy”. There’s something about this continent that makes its people (and its tourists) happy. Despite the daily struggles of so many of its people, you’ll come across a smiling face every day.
Why I love Africa?
There are many reasons why I love Africa, and why I’m proud to not just call myself South African but African aswel. The two main reasons that I love Africa though is because of our diversity in both the people and landscapes.
- Diverse population. Africa has a countless mix of cultures, languages, religions, and ethnicities across the continent. Just in South Africa alone we have 11 official languages and a complete mixed pot of cultures and races.
- Diverse landscape. From beautiful beaches, forests, deserts, mountains, the bush, lakes, rivers, swamps, and salt pans to winelands, historical towns, and major cities. No matter your travel taste, there will be something for you in Africa.
Travelstart recently compiled the below video which takes you around to various African countries talking about why each of them is awesome, and why you need to explore them.
Exploring African Countries
So as much as I love Africa, I haven’t explored it nearly enough! I’ve obviously seen a fair amount of South Africa, and then have also been to Swaziland, Mozambique and Botswana. The next African countries on my list to explore include Lesotho, Namibia, Zambia, and Morroco.
I recently took Travelstart’s quiz for ‘Which African country do you secretly want to explore?’ and got Botswana. Which makes complete sense, as ever since my first trip there in 2014 I’ve been absolutely in love with the country. I had the most amazing experience exploring the Delta for a week and developed a bit of an obsession with the elephants there. I was also lucky enough to go again in July this year for work and can’t wait until I get to go again! So yes, I do secretly want to explore Botswana 🙂
The quiz said the below about my choices, and it’s pretty true.
“You are a lover of nature and seeker of beauty and soul-stirring experiences. You are what some might call a paradox – a calm and gentle creature with an untamed soul. You are energized by good conversations and the roar of the city, but it is to the deep rumble of nature that your heart beats most fiercely.
Your search for magic and meaning means your exploration of the world is done with depth and passion and often lures you beyond the city limits. You find romance and beauty in the gentle ripples trailing behind mokoros in the Okavango Delta and marmalade hues of a wild Kalahari sunrise. You find it in the flickering light of campfires under starry African skies, early morning bird song and the steady galumph of elephants as they tread through the Chobe.
You find it everywhere, and it is this hunger for adventure of the mind and soul that keeps you reaching for new horizons.”
Which African country should you explore?
What makes you tick?
Is it days on the beach tanning, surfing, and taking long walks? Is it waking up to the chirping birds in the bush at sunrise or sitting around a campfire with friends? Perhaps you’re an adrenaline junkie seeking adventurous activities like skydiving, bungee jumping, and white water rafting? Or a city girl/guy looking for rooftop bars, markets, and a lively party scene?
Take the quiz to find out which African country do you secretly want to explore.
Let me know in the comments what you get!
